Thaksin's fate on KTB case undecided

The fate of Thaksin Shinawatra over his alleged involvement in the Krungthai Bank (KTB) loan scandal will remain undecided until the former prime minister is taken to court, a source at the Office of the Attorney-General (OAG) said on Thursday.

The source said the Supreme Court's Criminal Division for Political Office Holders on Wednesday did not rule on Thaksin and the bank's decision to loan more than 10 billion baht to Krissadamahanakorn through its affiliates.

Processing of the former prime minister will start when he appears before the court, the source added.

The court on Wednesday sentenced 19 of 26 defendants to jail terms for their involvement in approving the loans of more than 10 billion baht during 2003-2004 to the real estate developer through its affiliates, even though Krissadahanakorn was rated a non-performing debtor. They included Viroj Nualkhair, who was the KTB president at the time, and Suchai Jaovisidha, the then bank chairman. The two were sentenced to 18 years behind bars.

Viroj was sent to a hospital on Wednesday night after a heart attack.

State prosecutors named Thaksin, who was the prime minister when the loans were approved, as a first defendant in the case when the guilty parties were indicted in 2012. Thaksin is the subject of an arrest warrant over the case.

OAG deputy spokesman Kosolwat Inthuchanyong on Thursday refused to give details of the case against Thaksin. He would only say that prosecutors had strong evidence for their indictment.
