New TAT boss bullish on arrivals

The new head of the Tourism Authority of Thailand (TAT) expects 10 million visitor arrivals in the remainder of this year.

Yuthasak Supasorn, the 10th TAT governor, said the rising number of tourists would help to restore the country's image following the Erawan Shrine bombing.

Thailand welcomed 20 million foreign tourists year-to-date as of Tuesday.

Yuthasak: Return to normal in last quarter

Mr Yuthasak expects full-year foreign tourist arrivals will reach 30 million, surpassing the target of 28.8 million.

The tourism revenue target will remain 2.2 trillion baht — 1.4 trillion from foreign visitors and 800 million from domestic travel.

"Tourism has slowed since the bombing, but we believe the industry will return to normal in the fourth quarter," Mr Yuthasak said.

Previously, the TAT focused on generating revenue rather than arrival numbers.

But Mr Yuthasak said the situation was changing, and the outstanding number of tourist arrivals would help to send a message that Thailand remains attractive and safe after the bombing.

"Tourism is sensitive but can quickly adapt, so I strongly believe the business will bounce back eventually," he said.

"However, the right marketing and promotions must be in place to deal with the changing market."

Apart from restoring foreign tourists' confidence, the TAT must focus seriously on boosting domestic tourism to offset the decrease in international tourists in the third quarter.

Driving local tourism is also in line with the policy of the new economic team led by Deputy Prime Minister Somkid Jatusripitak.

Mr Yuthasak revealed he had met with Mr Somkid and said the main message from the new economic team was to boost local tourism.
