The consumer confidence index dropped again in August, for the eighth straight month, to the lowest level in 15 months, according to the University of the Thai Chamber of Commerce.

Thanavath Phonvichai, vice-president for research and director of the UTCC Centre for Economic and Business Forecasting, said the index stood at 72.3 points in August.

The index was at 73.4 points in July, 74.4 points in June, 75.6 in May, 76.6 in April, 77.7 in March, 79.1 in February and 80.4 in January.

He said the index reflected that the overall economic situation had not yet improved and consumers were still worried about uncertainty in the global economy.

Mr Thanavath said the negative impact in the aftermath of the Erawan shrine bomb in Bangkok was still lingering, along with the contraction of exports, the drought, falling farm prices and the high cost of living.

The centre predicted that consumer confidence would not pick up in the short term, but that it would recover gradually in the wake of the new cabinet's economic stimulus through the injection of 139 billion baht into the system.
