Amway taps overweight consumers

Amway (Thailand) sees market opportunity in the large number of overweight Thais.

It hopes to revive slowing sales of food supplements with the launch of a new weight-loss product in the coming weeks.

Managing director Kittawat Ritteerawee said obesity was a growing threat for Thais, who were becoming more sedentary.

The Health Systems Research Institute's 2009 health survey showed one-third of Thais were overweight.

The survey ranked Thailand second in Asean, behind Malaysia, in terms of the number of overweight people, a trend that continues today.

Many Thais are turning to weight-loss products, with the market valued at 10 billion baht and experiencing average growth of 8% per year.

Capitalising on the trend, Amway (Thailand) will launch BodyKey by Nutrilite on Sept 20.

Thailand will be the seventh country to have this weight-loss product. Others include the US and South Korea.

"Though the local economy is not good, the number of Thais who are concerned about their health and looks continues to increase," Mr Kittawat said.

"This is an opportunity for Nutrilite to continue growing amid the slowdown in consumer spending."

Amway (Thailand) is confident that BodyKey by Nutrilite will become a major product helping to boost Nutrilite's overall sales by at least 7% to 6.7 billion baht this year.

BodyKey by Nutrilite will help the company to maintain this year's total sales on a par with last year's or even a slight increase of 1-2%, Mr Kittawat said.

The stuttering economy has not hit sales of the company's food supplements, as many people remain health-conscious.

But weak purchasing power due to lower farm prices has hurt sales of other Amway products.

Amway (Thailand) has 3.3 million sales representatives, although the number of new members fell considerably in the first half.

However, Mr Kittawat said the situation had picked up in the past couple of months.

Amway remains the No.1 direct-sales brand in Thailand, with local sales of 16.2 billion baht in 2014.
