Exports slide again in August, but still trade surplus

Exports continued to slide in August, down by 6.69% year-on-year, due to the slow global economy and low oil prices, resulting in a contraction of 4.92% over the eight-month period.

Somkiat Triratpan, director of the Commerce Ministry's Office of Trade Policy and Strategy, said Thailand shipped a total of US$17.6 billion in August, the eighth month in a row that exports have declined this year.

Imports totalled $16.9 billion in the month, resulting in a trade surplus of $721 million.

Exports for the eight-month period totalled $142 billion, down 4.92% from the same period of 2014, while the imports were at $137 billion, down 8.18%. Thailand has a trade surplus of $4.964 billion for the first eight months of 2015.
