Laem Chabang Port plans cargo projects worth B6bn

Three major investment projects worth about six billion baht are planned for the development of a cargo transport system at Laem Chabang Port in Chon Buri.

The five-year plan has been initiated in a bid to turn the port into an Asean hub.

The projects are being implemented to improve rail and land transport and container terminals at the port, Laem Chabang Port director Montree Rerkjamnian said on Thursday.

The plans are designed to help the port keep up with predicted growth in demand for port services, he said.

A contractor was being sought for a 1.8-billion-baht container terminal development project, Pol Sub Lt Montree said.

The project was expected to be completed in 2018 resulting in additional cargo volume capacity of 300,000 twenty-foot equivalent units (TEU) per year, he said.

He said 2.9 billion baht had been allocated for rail transfer development at the port. This is expected to be done by 2018 as well, he said, adding that a second phase of the project will be implemented between 2021 and 2022.

Another project is increasing cargo-check gates, designed to help ease heavy traffic inside port areas.

When the third project is completed, the port will be equipped with 31 cargo-check gates and it will have the capacity to accommodate cargo containers at between 10 million and 11 million TEU per year, he said.

Pol Sub Lt Montree said Laem Chabang will become a hub of various forms of transport and logistics for Asean.

Aside from these development projects, there are still other related projects being invested in by other state agencies in the areas surrounding the port, he said.

Laem Chabang Port is currently conducting public hearings, he said.
