TrueVisions fined for breaking NBTC rules

Regulators will slap TrueVisions with administrative fines for failing to comply with two of their digital-TV rules.

The cable-TV operator failed to rearrange its channel numbers from 1-36 by the Jan 7 deadline as stipulated by the National Broadcasting and Telecommunications Commission (NBTC), said Sombat Leelapata, acting deputy secretary general of the NBTC's broadcasting committee on Monday.

"For that, TrueVisions will be fined 20,000 baht a day from the due date. If it still refuses to comply within 30 days, its case will be reviewed at the committee's meeting and tougher measures such as a larger fine or licence suspension revocation is possible," Mr Sombat said.

TrueVisions may appeal the court if it disagrees with the penalties, he added.

The True Corp subsidiary will also miss the deadline on following the must-carry rule on Tuesday.

It has aired free-TV content with ads totalling 12 minutes a day as opposed to the six-minute limit set by the NBTC.

Starting Jan 13, TrueVisions will have to pay a 1-million-baht administrative fine and a daily 5,000-baht fine until it complies with the rule.

It was unclear why the cable-TV operator continues to defy the NBTC's orders. But generally, operators are paid premiums from station owners for certain channel numbers.
