Thailand's motorcycle market is expected to edge up this year by 2-3% to about 1.7 million units, boosted by the government's economic stimulus measures.

Suchart Arunsaengroj, director of AP Honda, said the government's cash infusion into rural areas to stimulate investment and consumption, both through the Village Fund and funding of tambon projects, would improve the overall motorcycle market.

Last September, the cabinet approved about 136 billion baht for three quick-fix measures to jump-start the sluggish economy.

On Tuesday, the cabinet approved an infusion of another 35 billion baht into rural areas to stimulate investment and consumption.

The move aims to increase investment in villages through projects such as agriculture processing and value-added farm products.

New motorcycle registrations at the Land Transport Department fell slightly by 1.6% to 1.67 million last year.

According to Mr Suchart, the Thai motorcycle market is estimated to stay at 1.7-1.8 million units a year over the next few years and will never see sales surge to 2 million units as seen in 2011 and 2013.

Thailand's motorcycle sales surpassed 2 million for the first time in 2011, hitting 2.01 million.

Sales rose to 2.13 million units in 2012, marking the highest ever in the country before dropping to just 2 million in 2013.

In 2014, the market fell sharply by 15% to 1.7 million amid political turmoil and payment delays to farmers under the rice pledging scheme.

Mr Suchart said prospects for the big-bike segment remained promising, with middle-end and high-end buyers hardly affected by economic hardship.

"There were roughly 20,000 big bikes sold last year, up 20%," said Mr Suchart, who predicted sales would grow at a double-digit rate this year.
