PHUKET - A British firm plans to build the world’s tallest Ferris wheel on an old mining site here within the next two years.

The project to be developed by Thai Business Development Co -- a joint venture of technology supplier PAX Group and the Anuphas property group - aims to create a new landmark for the province.

The goal is to beat Singapore Flyer's 165-metre-tall wheel that opened to the public in 2008. Singapore's pride was bested in 2014 by the High Roller in Las Vegas, which stands 167.6 meters tall.

Igor Protasov, chairman of Thai Business Development, said the company aimed to invest 20 billion baht in the project on 40 rai in Phuket town. The company hopes to complete the Ferris wheel in 18-24 months, depending on government approval.

Pax Group was founded in 1993 and has a portfolio of wheels in Russia, Italy, South Korea.
