Customs officers have seized goods purchased online worth about 6.8 million baht being smuggled into Thailand in a shipping container at Laem Chabang port in Chon Buri province.

Kitti Sutthisamphan, customs chief at the port, said on Tuesday that the seizure was part of an operation to tackle tax evasion involving products purchased online overseas.

Customs officials at Laem Chabang examined a container declared by two companies as holding used furniture, household appliances and teaching media from the United States.

They were identified as KS Import & Export Co and SWA Shipping Co. The container arrived last Thursday.

The contents as declared were worth a total of 1.26 million baht and subject to tariffs totalling about 170,000 baht.

However, Mr Kitti said, the search also revealed many undeclared goods in the container - including audio products, bicycles, bags, shoes, cosmetics, food supplements, breast milk pumps, toys and games.

They were in about 1,500 packs and their actual prices were estimated at 6.8 million baht, he said.
