Yingluck: Accused of dereliction of duty

The committee pursuing liabilities against wrongdoers in the state sector expects to conclude seeking compensation from former prime minister Yingluck Shinawatra by July for damages from the rice-pledging scheme, whose losses are estimated in the hundreds of billions of baht.

The conclusion is expected to be reached near Asanha Bucha Day on July 19, said Manas Jamveha, director-general of the Comptroller-General's Department.

The committee chaired by Mr Manas is expected to hold six more meetings before making a decision on the compensation case against Ms Yingluck.

Mr Manas said a prime minister's duties are not limited to overseeing government policies and also include supervising policy proceedings.

Ms Yingluck has been accused of dereliction of duty for failure to stem losses and corruption in the rice-pledging scheme. The estimated loss from the scheme has widened beyond the previously reported 536 billion baht, according to a financial accounting as of the end of last September.

A source familiar with the matter said recently that as much as 200 billion baht in compensation could be sought from Ms Yingluck.

Apart from the former premier, the committee through the Commerce Ministry has demanded 20 billion baht in compensation for four fake government-to-government (G-to-G) rice deals involving 6.2 million tonnes of rice, pointing the finger at six people in the Yingluck government.

The six are former commerce minister Boonsong Teriyapirom; former deputy commerce minister Poom Sarapol; former secretary to the commerce minister Weerawut Wajanaphukka; former Department of Foreign Trade (DFT) director-general Manas Soiploy; former deputy DFT director-general Tikhumporn Natvaratat; and the DFT's former director of foreign rice trade, Akharaphong Chuaikliang.
