Survey reveals decline in popularity of traditional outlets

The government should speed up retail and wholesale legislation with clear zones for modern trade outlets after a recent study showed a decline in shopping at traditional grocery shops.

A survey of 2,402 people on consumer behaviour indicated that spending rose by 8.5% but the volume of purchases dropped by 3% compared to last year.

Thanavath Phonvichai, vice-president of the University of Thai Chamber of Commerce, said there had been a change in behaviour with consumers preferring to shop at modern trade venues, which was reflected in the rising market share of sales through this channel.

d1: Is correct about the pattern of destruction of small shops in the UK, however if you look at other European countries and big city USA there is still an appreciation of (and support for) speciality shops. The answer to the challenge of big supermarkets is not government subsidy, but moving to higher quality distinctive products.

You did not have to do a survey on consumer spending,Go and see what has happened to the high streets in European countries who have open legislation.THe damage has been done they are trying to revitalise the high streets.I fear monopolization of 3 or 4 major players, they will certainly start to increase there profit margins when small players have been put out of business.Supermarkets retailing petrol in the UK has all but destroyed the small filling stations.Butchers ,bakers, grocers, stationers are all going out of business and all caused by shopping centres and supermarkets. It is OK if you have transport but what about those who have not and the elderly.
