Pantip Plaza aims to ban pirate goods

Shops in Pantip Plaza that sell illegal software and pirated music and movie VCDs and DVDs will see their 30-year leases expire in September, says the operator, changing the image of the 20-year-old Bangkok mall.

The developer is also investing 300 million baht to renovate the plaza as a digital lifestyle centre focusing on mobile devices. It aims to be an IT gateway for the Mekong subregion within five years.

Yongyuth Chaichana, managing director of Thippatana Arcade, which operates Pantip Plaza, said the renovation began in the fourth quarter of last year and is expected to be finished by the end of next year.

Without the cheap DVD's and CD's there will be no point going there.

Oh great, it will be another mall full of mobile devices. In other words, row after row of endless small concessions selling the exact same thing.

In Thai style English idiosyncrasies, it means this building which was leased for 30 years by the original owner later resold the remaining 20 years lease to the ‘Liquor King’ who had the foresight to convert the building into a dedicated computer centre. “Every man is the architect of his own fortune” - Sallust Roman politician

These clandestine activities had been going on since Pantip Plaza reinvented itself as a computer centre many years ago. Due to massive drop in customer turnout, the Management is forced to undertake some kind of facelift before this place become irrelevant as an IT centre. It will reposition itself as a multi-experience shopping plaza while still retaining its unique identity as a one-stop ‘infocomm’ centre e.g. adding more food restaurants, clothing and other consumer related products. However, increasing rental rates is a very bad idea because the upgrading needs to work for the retailers inside the Plaza first before doing so.

“Pantip Plaza is a major source of unauthorized copies of software, with software for both Windows and Mac readily available. Applications software and games, together with pirated copies of music and films, including the pornographic variety, are sold from many of the stalls on the lower three floors. Some legitimate software is available, but it is less popular and versions on sale are often obsolete ones”. (Wikipedia).
Couldn’t they have waited till April 1st to make this announcement? Were it to be true they’d go down the pan within a month and the many uniformed government officials seen in there would have nowhere else to shop.
