The government wants TOT Plc, CAT Telecom and True Corporation to halve their broadband internet prices to improve access to high-speed internet services for half of the country's population.
The three operators currently charge 590 baht a month for broadband access at 2 megabits per second.
The Information and Communications Technology (ICT) Ministry says a monthly charge of 300 baht would expand the market for the operators and also promote economic growth.
Nimit Dumrongrat, an adviser to the ICT minister, said the ministry had a budget of 2 billion baht that could be used to procure low-priced computers for consumers, and cheaper broadband would encourage more people to get connected.
He said the ministry wanted to expand broadband access to communities with the target of 50% of all households by 2010. It also wants to upgrade the country's global ranking for information access from 70th place to 15th by 2013.
