Functions or security: You have a choice

GPS is not just for cars any more. Nowadays, most smartphones have GPS capability along with a geolocation service for social network applications such as Facebook, Twitter, Foursquare and Google Latitude. The service provides the latitude, longitude, speed, direction and altitude of your phone.

However, despite their great potential usefulness, mobile geolocation services also carry potential security risks for users.

Like any tracking technology, a geolocation service can make an application more personalised, but this proves attractive to law enforcement personnel and wrongdoers alike. Enabling the service can therefore create security and privacy issues.
