ICT Ministry marks country milestone in broadband use

Some 37% of Thais accessed fixed-based and wireless high-speed broadband services this year, up from 10% last year, following the first year of administration of Information and Communication Technology Minister Gp Capt Anudith Nakornthap.

The ministry plans to hit 80% by 2015 through the proliferation of smartphones and tablets as well as planned third-generation wireless broadband service, rising to 95% by 2020.

The country's mobile, broadband and fixed-line infrastructure now covers 87% of the total population, said Gp Capt Anudith.

He said free public WiFi service will increase to 30,000 locations by year-end, up from the current 10,567 hotspots.

The government's free WiFi services have attracted 279,128 total users.

"We aim to increase the number of WiFi locations to 250,000 in the future," said Gp Capt Anudith.

He also highlighted the government information network (GIN) project under his tenure, a network linking all government agency infrastructures in a single platform.

The GIN is aimed at enhancing people's ability to access all public telecom services.

Gp Capt Anudith said the government's Smart Thailand project hopes to utilise smart networks, smart governments and smart businesses by 2015.

He also pointed to the government's One Tablet per Child project.

Surapol Navamavadhana, an adviser to the ICT minister, said the government allocated an additional 300 million baht for the project for use in mobile device management and building educational data centres.

Of the total budget, 120 million baht will be slated for installing device management systems called Afaria to control children's access.
