The looming 3G auction, and why mobile providers are so optimistic.

Loss of face can be a great motivator in the Land of Smiles, and now it appears likely to finally bring wireless third-generation (3G) broadband technology to Thailand. After years of delays, leading to every other country in Southeast Asia acquiring 3G, Thailand is set to have a licence auction for the 2.1-gigahertz spectrum on Oct 16.

Executives of the three major mobile providers in Thailand _ Advanced Info Service, Total Access Communication (DTAC) and True Move _ all expect the auction to take place this time, and have been working with the National Broadcasting and Telecommunications Commission (NBTC) on the details.
