CAT Telecom insists it has the right to handle 2G mobile service during a one-year transition after the contracts of its concessionaires expire in September.
If the National Broadcasting and Telecommunications Commission (NBTC) agrees to allow concessionaires True Move and Digital Phone Co (DPC), the latter a unit of Advanced Info Service, to continue operating 2G service on the 1800-megahertz band after expiry as stipulated in a draft regulation, CAT will file a petition against the regulator.
The concessions of True Move and DPC are set to expire under agreements with state-owned CAT on Sept 15. The two have a combined 17 million subscribers using the 1800-MHz bandwidth for 2G service.
