Film studio gets South Korean partner

South Korea's CJ Entertainment has jumped into the burgeoning local film market by forming a partnership with Thailand's Transformation Films.

The companies initially plan to spend 60 million baht to create a movie for teenagers called Tae Kob Fha (Touching the Sky) with Nichkhun Horvejkul, a Thai singer and K-pop boy band member whom most teens recognise.

Transformation Films chief executive Sangar Chatchairungruang said the movie would premiere in mid-April and projected revenue would surpass 100 million baht.

The South Korean partners will help to promote the Thai movie industry at a regional level.

Thai film has faced a funding shortage, leading to low-quality productions and no growth in the industry over the past three years.

"We needed to seek a foreign partner with capability and knowledge," Mr Sangar said.

CJ Entertainment is South Korea's leading cinematic entertainment provider and has operations in China, Japan, Vietnam and Myanmar.

Tae Sung-jeong, head of CJ Entertainment's film division, hailed the Thai movie industry's growth potential.

The country is Southeast Asia's biggest in terms of film investment.
