Spring News Corporation, the operator of Spring News channel, has sealed a partnership deal on news exchange with the Xinhua News Agency's Bangkok bureau.

The move is aimed at enhancing competitiveness at Spring News as it seeks to become a leading broadcaster in Asean.

The memorandum of understanding was signed by Ming Dajun, Xinhua's Bangkok bureau chief, and Patchara Sarapimpa, chief operating officer of Spring News.

Both Spring News and Xinhua want to extend communications between people in Thailand and China, strengthen bilateral relations and intensify the cooperation between the two news agencies in the field of news exchange.

They also expect cooperation and news exchange to foster mutual understanding, friendship and knowledge among their media personnel.

Spring News executives said previously there would be many opportunities to generate revenue from expanding business abroad, especially to the newly formed Asean Economic Community because people still need updates about news and information across the region.

The channel's Asean Direct programme has already struck content collaborations with broadcasters in many Asean countries such as Indonesia, Malaysia, Singapore, Myanmar, Laos and Cambodia.

According to Nielsen Co (Thailand), Spring News was ranked 20th among 27 free TV channels nationwide last month and first among six news channels in terms of viewership ratings.

Its viewers are mostly the middle class in Bangkok and major provinces.
