KHON KAEN -- A Thai Smile Airways flight from this northeastern province to Suvarnabhumi airport on Sunday morning was cancelled due to technical problems.

Athaya Larpmark, director of Khon Kaen airport, announced the cancellation of Thai Smile Flight WE-041, which was due to depart from Khon Kaen for Suvarnabhumi at 9.20am, after the airline's technical staff found technical problems on the Airbus A320-200 aircraft.

Mr Athaya said the flight was cancelled for safety reasons. No details were given regarding the technical problems.

The cancellation left more than 100 passengers stranded at the airport, which was crowded with people waiting for return flights to Bangkok as it was Sunday.

Mr Athaya said Thai Smile staff were coordinating with other airlines to transfer the passengers to other flights while waiting for information on whether another plane would be sent to Khon Kaen to take the stranded passengers, said Mr Athaya.
