Can Tho-Bangkok flights short-lived

Vietnam suspended an air link between Can Tho and Bangkok on Thursday, less than a month after the launch, as the service struggled to show it could be profitable.

Vietravel, the local government in Can Tho and Thai VietJet Air launched the first flight on July 21 to promote Thailand among Vietnamese in the Mekong Delta on a trial basis.

The service came to an end with the last flight on Thursday, the Tuoi Tre newspaper reported on Thursday, quoting an unnamed tourism official in Can Tho.

Nguyen Khanh Tung, director of the Can Tho tourism promotion centre, told the news website on Wednesday that the route was loss-making as the high season for travel had passed.

Vietravel, which is a leading tour organiser in Vietnam, was reluctant to resume the service, he added.

Mr Tung said the service could return next year during the Lunar New Year or summer.

A one-way ticket on the route was charged at 2.69 million dong (4,300 baht).

Can Tho, about 170 kilometres southwest of Ho Chi Minh City, is Vietnam's fourth largest city. Its airport is the largest in the Mekong Delta.

Last year 560,000 tourists from Vietnam visited Thailand, making them the fourth largest in Asean after Malaysians, Laotians and Singaporeans, according to the Thai Tourism Department.
