Airports ready for 16% surge in travellers

Main Thai airports will be teeming with Songkran revellers, with nearly 4 million people departing and arriving over the holiday.

Passengers passing through the six main airports in the 10-day period starting today are projected to soar 16% over the same period last year to 3.98 million or 361,837 per day.

Rising in tandem are aircraft movements (take-offs and landings), which will grow by 10% to a record 24,227 or 2,202 a day, according to an estimate by Airports of Thailand Plc (AoT).

AoT president Nitinai Sirismatthakarn advises travellers to get to airports three hours prior to departure for international flights and two hours for domestic flights.

Among the six AoT-operated airports with international status, Suvarnabhumi will have the heaviest load in the period, handling a daily average of 166,760 passengers (up 7%) and 936 aircraft movements (up 6%).

Bangkok's Don Mueang, billed as one of the largest low-cost carrier hubs in Southeast Asia, will see a 24% surge in passenger traffic to 103,082 a day and an 8% growth in aircraft movements to 671.

Phuket, the country's third-busiest airport, will have a 30% leap in passenger traffic to 46,048 a day and a 26% rise in aircraft movements to 285 a day.

Chiang Mai airport is expected to record a 23% jump in passenger traffic to 27,355 a day and an 8% increase in aircraft movements to 191 per day.

Chiang Rai is booked for a 36% surge in passenger traffic to 6,526 a day and 25% growth in aircraft movements to 42 a day.

Passenger volume at Hat Yai airport will show an 18% increase to 12,066 a day, with aircraft take-offs and landings increasing 10% to 77 per day.

Meanwhile, travel search engine Skyscanner has revealed that Thailand's popularity as a Songkran destination is rising.

Its data reveals a 48% year-on-year increase in overall searches for Thailand to over 330,000, with Bangkok, Phuket, Koh Samui, Chiang Mai and Krabi claiming the spotlight as the most popular destinations.
