TAT asks for 60% bump in budget to meet targets

The Tourism Authority of Thailand (TAT) plans to ask for 8.4 billion baht as its 2012 budget to boost Thai tourism to the target set by the Yingluck Shinawatra government by 2015.

The 2012 budget, which is 60% higher than the amount in 2011, will be spent to push international tourist arrivals to 30 million contributing revenue of 2 trillion baht in four years.

Some 600 million baht will be used for the Miracle Thailand campaign, which will celebrate the 84th birthday anniversary of His Majesty the King this year and Her Majesty the Queen's 80th birthday next year.

The last time TAT did anything useful to tourism in Thailand was with their "Amazing Thailand" campaign, and that was a long time ago.

Furthermore, TAT tourism numbers, both current and future, are always fabricated and way to high, in order to prove that their campaigns are efficient. This way they can apply for even more money for their officials to steal through corruption.

The government should do the right thing, close the TAT, and let the Thai Hotel Association or a similar organisation run by tourism business operators, not government officials with nothing at stake, decide which way the money should be spent!
