Thailand revs up F1 bid

Thailand will bid to stage a Formula One race to help spur tourism and meeting businesses, according to the Thailand Convention & Exhibition Bureau (TCEB).

Visitors admire the Renault R31 Formula One racing car at a promotional event staged over the weekend at Siam Paragon by Total lubricant oil, Lotus sports cars, CTS car protection products and TW Steel watches. Deputy Public Minister Torphong Chaiyasarn (centre) attended the event.

TCEB president Akapol Sorasuchart said the agency was responding to calls by businesses to bring in or hold big events to enhance the country's reputation among foreign tourists now that local political conditions have improved.

@Disc 1 - So all the f1 events in other country's are failures? Of course locals make up most of the people attending but, it could bring 10-20% more tourists in the same time compare to no f1 race.
@Disc 2 - So why did singapore host a f1 event even though malaysia already had one? and its so close?

I think thailand would be perfect to host an F1 event, the racing community is growing very fast and infact the biggest in southeast asia. Probably third biggest in Asia behind Japan, and China.
150,000 showed up for an exhibition shows the enormous amount of interest it generated even with majority in attendance who knew nothing about f1 cars.

Cars moving quickly through the streets of Bangkok, only in your dreams. I’m surprised no official has yet declared Bangkok the potential “Hub” of Formula 1 racing.

More pipe dreams. The chance of Thailand staging a race when there are already races in Malaysia and Singapore must be zero. As usual, Thailand has missed the boat and is trying to play catch-up.
