Travel fair is a bellwether

The Thai Travel Agents Association (TTAA) expects Asean's largest industry exhibition, the 10th Thai International Travel Fair (TITF) under the theme of "Oh! Summer", will be a crucial indicator of local tourism prospects this year.

Some 800,000 visitors are expected to attend the four-day event, generating revenue of 1.3 billion baht, up from 1.26 billion last year.

Featuring 1,100 booths, the TITF will be held at the Queen Sirikit National Convention Center from Feb 23-26.

"Domestic tourists this year are estimated to take 107 million trips for revenue of 440 billion."

Says who? It is impossible for the Department of Tourism, the Ministry of Tourism and Sports, or the Tourism Authority of Thailand (or anyone for that matter), to count domestic tourists or know how much they spend. At best, it is a wild guess.
