The welcome mat is out all over the world for a new wave of big spenders. They’re not celebrities, sports stars or public figures. They’re Chinese tourists, whose power is in their sheer numbers and the amount of money in their pockets.
Chinese travellers and shoppers are already going abroad by the millions, spending much more on luxury products and activities abroad than they do at home. Tourism promoters everywhere – Thailand is no exception – are all trying to figure out how to draw that money to their countries.
“China will become the world’s most powerful economy. And think what will happen if the Chinese are nine times richer than they are today – there will be more than 100 million tourists planning to travel overseas. What matters is where they will be going and how can we attract them”, Dhanin Chearavanont, chairman and CEO of the Charoen Pokphand Group (CP), said earlier this year.
