There are Americans who fled their country not only because of the war on terror but the financial troubles that came along, who do still live here in Thailand in a quite normal way. In some countries people have to carry an identity card nearly even to go to sleep. I know a story of someone who went across the street to buy a pack of cigarettes and was caught by the police for not having such a card on him at the moment.
