Basic order must be maintained - or the worst elements both here in Thailand and from abroad will fester and this is all you will get. Also, a mature nation doesn't need to rely on tourism. Imagine Japan, South Korea, Germany, or Singapore wringing their hands over a drop in tourism!

Tourists are looking for 3C's: convenience, cleanliness and comfort which includes safety. As long as Thailand cannot provide them we will lose them to other destinations. Krabi provincial authorities appeared to shoot themselves in the foot. covering up the incidents. It's a matter of urgency that these people be removed, investigated and replaced. The safety issue is mandatory to us all as well as tourists.

I for one would never recommend a holiday in Thailand for family or friends who don't know the ins and outs of a scamming destination with no scruples.

Most English people I know now just use Bangkok as a stop over and head to other far more exotic locations in the region. Thailand's had its day for international travelers, still if you live here you can get some great deals on all these empty hotel rooms.

It’s about time tourists woke-up. Thailand is changing rapidly and not for the better. The image propagated by TAT as a safe and amazing little Buddhist nation is becoming further from the truth. There is a large amount of violent crime in Thailand and tourists are not immune. Read the newspapers about the way Thais treat Thais and then the web sited and travel blogs about how this criminality is spreading to the tourists. There is always denial and cover up because getting tourist money trumps tourists safety. Be aware before you go.

With the advent of social media such as Youtube, Google+, and Facebook, it is essentially impossible to hide, coverup, or ignore problems like these or things like the taxi mafia or jet ski scams. Travelers search the web and social media before traveling looking for safety related issues. Tourism is one of Thailand's biggest draws. If it does not move in a serious way to provide a safe, secure place for those tourists, they will go elsewhere even if the price is higher.

The only way they listen is when it hurts their pocketbooks. Hope this is a wakeup call for Thailand.
