Hoteliers wrestle with labour paucity, supply glut

A shortage of workers is becoming a big problem for the Thai hotel industry, and the government has offered no ideas for dealing with the issue.

Surapong Techaruvichit, president of the Thai Hotels Association (THA), said hoteliers have faced a labour shortage since 2010, particularly in resort areas like Phuket, Samui and Pattaya.

A rapid increase in hotel rooms in many cities is making the shortage even worse.

Higher wages = higher room rates = lower occupancy levels = missed targets by the TAT.

If anyone still thinks tourism is going to make up for declining exports, they are failing to understand the principle reason why exports are declining. And why occupancy rates will and must plunge. Unless of course the BoT can create a credit bubble... but that's another story....

Shorter hours, ( see split shifts ), 50 % room discounts, ( based on availability )for
employees vacationing in other cities and for family visiting Pattaya, bonuses/prizes for top performers,( Manager's parking space for a week ? ),free cafeteria meals, and even higher pay then
your competitors though money is not the only thing lacking.

Reduce number of hours worked, supply free or low cost cafeteria food,
buy a few shuttle busses to bring in out of site workers, bonuses for exceptional
producers, large discount on rooms for employees and relatives. The Hilton in Oak
Lawn, Il allows a 50 % for vacationing employees and family members in other cities.
