Tourist arrivals at record 22 million

More than 22 million tourists visited Thailand last year, up nearly 16% year-on-year, setting a new record for the kingdom, according to figures released Monday.

The Ministry of Tourism and Sports said 22.3 foreigners visited Thailand in 2012, with the Chinese (2.7 million) just topping Malaysians (2.5 million), followed by Russians (1.3 million), Japanese (1.3 million), Koreans (1.1 million), British (870,164) and Germans (681,566).

"Last year, the world was generally at peace and there were no major geopolitical, economic, environmental or natural disasters and no health pandemics,'' Tourism Authority of Thailand governor Suraphon Svetasreni said on Monday.

The Ministry of Tourism and Sports should include the increasing number of Rohingya tribes as tourists. They are foreigners coming here so probably we should include them.. and let them spend their money in our land, don't send them out after 6 months of stay here.

The numbers add up to less than 11 million, where did the other additional 11 million tourists come from???

What would also be interesting is to break these numbers down by duration of stay and also by income category (supplied on the arrival card). The sense I get from my friends in the industry is that wallet size is down. They also report numbers down which is not in line with the data - but could be explained by people staying for shorter periods

An increase in the nunmber of tourists to Thailand has posed moree [prpblems to our natural resorces and ecology. Therefor the government must implement strictrules to govern usages of ecologically fragile resorces. Of course, tourists will spend money here to a cetain extent no matter where their destinations are. MOst afr likely to rstay in Bangkok for our seaside resorts for a few days before returning home or going to other destinations. Thailand is a boon for all tourists because of its exlenlent hotels and inexpensives servises, good food and quality merchanise.

Thailand's ecology cannot absorb that many tourists without facing major damages... What are we doing about this? Where is sustainable development? Quality is what we need, not quantity.

These are arrivals. Since Bangkok is a direct-flight hub from many countries around the world, unlike the capitals of our neighbours, people who want to spend their holiday in Vietnam, have no other choice but to fly to Bangkok first. These numbers mean nothing.
