The number of visitors from China to Vietnam plunged last month.

Chinese tourists visiting Vietnam in February dropped 50% to 117,560 year-on-year, the Saigon Times reported, quoting figures from the Vietnamese General Statistics Office.

About 756,000 foreign travellers, led by South Koreans, visited Vietnam last month, a 10% drop from a year ago, it added.

Conflicts between Vietnam and China over the disputed China Sea last year deterred Chinese tourists from putting Vietnam on their destination map.

Vietnam is targeting 7.5 million foreign visitors this year, according to the Vietnamese Culture, Sports and Tourism Ministry.

But the country encountered a decline in tourists for nine months in a row dating back to last year.

Vietnam, Thailand, Malaysia, Singapore and Indonesia are courting free-spending Chinese as well.
