Vietnam is considering creating a brand name for its rice to ensure quality for foreign consumers.

The idea was detailed in a proposal by the Vietnamese Agriculture and Rural Development Ministry presented to the government, the Vietnam News reported on Tuesday.

Thailand, India and Vietnam are the top three countries exporting rice to the global market.

Despite being a leading rice exporter, Vietnam has seen its rice remain relatively anonymous in the world and a national brand could help the country penetrate more markets, such as the United States, Europe and Japan where consumers were conscious of the rice quality and hygiene standards, the minister said.

The proposed national brand will be certified in all producing processes by authorities, it added.

The Mekong Delta in southern Vietnam is the country's rice bowl as about 90% of the commodity produced there was exported to other countries.
