E-commerce expands out

Companies can locate out of city

Being based outside of Bangkok is no drawback when it comes to doing business over the Internet, according to Thaibiz.com managing director Heiko Wilms, who has seen the company's business grow since offering e-commerce services a few months back.

Starting with a single portable computer in 1996, the Phuket-based company now has around 100 customers both within Thailand and abroad.

Mr Wilms said that providing only web design services was no longer enough now that e-commerce has become a driving force. "What are pretty pages good for if they do not sell?" he asked.

Mr Wilms also said that many Bangkok businesses are now looking outside the capital for e-commerce consulting services.

"I guess the Thai government and banks quite underestimated the demand (for e-commerce). Since we introduced the payment option, we have received over 35 inquiries, all from Bangkok."

Thaibiz.com uses the Siam Commercial Bank for the clearance of payments.

Its web sit can be reached at http://www.thaibiz.com.
