Saint Joseph Bangna School
The Educational Services Department of the Bangkok Post has provided many services to the community, including educational materials, regular seminars and workshops for teachers and students as well as discounted newspapers for teachers who purchase copies for whole classes.
The core programme entitled "Improving Your English With the Bangkok Post" appears from Tuesday through Friday in the classified section of the newspaper, and here on the Internet updated six days a week.
The Friday column - post tips - is designed especially for teachers. Its main purpose is to acquaint teachers with a wide variety of methods for teaching reading based on authentic material found in a daily newspaper.
Bangkok Post: A bridge between language skills and life skills
This term post tips focuses on lessons tested in real classrooms. The first lesson features a class of 48 high school students from Saint Joseph Bangna School near Bangkok. The goal of the activities is to familiarise students and teachers with the content of the Bangkok Post.
Acharn Terry briefs the teachers about the aims of the lesson. Acharn Phatcharaporn, second left, then shared with the other teachers what her students had done in the week before the educational services team visited.
A big thank you to the teachers and students of the school for helping us to fine-tune the lesson.
Emphasis on life skills
There were prizes for students who shared what they had learned about the Bangkok Post. |
During the week they had worked in groups to find and cut out a variety of different information: the most interesting story of the day, pictures with good captions, information about the stock market, weather reports and cartoons. They gained a good understanding of what was in a daily newspaper and how to find it in the Bangkok Post.
Activity One: A group competition
First, the students got ready for the competition by taking a quick look through the paper to make sure they remembered where each kind of information is found. |
In their groups, they had to work as quickly as possible because the first group to answer all the questions corrrectly would be the winners.
The groups learned to arrange themselves so that it was easy to work together. |
Cooperation is the key to getting the task completed quickly.
Acharn Terry has a final wrap-up with the students and there are applause for all groups for work well done. |
Students and teachers ended the day with a new appreciation of ways that a daily newspaper can be used in the classroom to help everyone improve their English. the staff of educational services also learned a lot and had a good time.
Acharn Terry talks with Acharn Phatcharaporn about writing the Teacher's notes for the lesson. |
You can see those notes and the whole lesson by returning to post tips for June 16, 2000.
