Wisaporn "Som" Booyong

"I'm a volunteer of the faculty of humanities of Chiangmai University to be like a 'buddy' of the St. Olaf students. We do activities and we get together every evening. We talk a lot. We learn the Thai language together. I teach them and they practice with me a lot. When the host families say something in Thai that they don't understand, they will write it in 'karaoke' English and ask me what it means. They have trouble pronouncing some Thai words like sua (shirt) and suu (buy). I'm also learning English vocabulary from them.

I'm with all 21 students sometimes, but I mainly hang out with a smaller group of ten or twelve people . They (St. Olaf students) like to go shopping and eating - fast food like Pizza Hut - but they want to taste Thai food too, such as fried noodles and mussel pancakes, and papaya salad - not too spicy. It's a very good experience."
