Translating newspaper English to Thai

Malee:	aajaan kha wannii nuu maa khaw khwaamruu rueng wanwaalenthaai kha
	อาจารย์คะ วันนึ้หนูมาขอความรู้ เรื่องวันวาเลนไทน์ค่ะ	Teachers, today I’d like to ask you for some information about Valentine’s Day.
Mr Jim:	ja thaam arai la
	จะถามอะไรล่ะ	What would you like to know?
Malee:	thammai riek wanthii sipsii kumphaaphan waa “wanwaalenthaai” kha
	ทำไมเรียกวันที่ 14 กุมภาพันธ์ว่า “วันวาเลนไทน์” คะ	Why is February 14 called “Valentine’s Day”?
Ms Kim:	pen chue khawng nakbun thaan nueng Sent Waalenthaai
	เป็นชื่อของนักบุญท่านหนึ่ง เซนต์วาเลนไทน์	(It’s) the name of a Saint, Saint Valentine.
Mr Jim:	thaan pen phra nai saatsanaakhrit nai samai aanaajak Roaman
	ท่านเป็นพระในศาสนาคริสต์ ในสมัยอาณาจักรโรมัน	He was a priest in the time of the Roman Empire.
Ms Kim:	jakrapat Khlawdi-us haam khon taeng-ngaan kan
	จักรพรรดิ์คลอดิอุสห้ามคน แต่งงานกัน	Emperor Claudius forbade people to marry.
Mr Jim:	doay hai heytphon waa chaai thii tang-gnaan laew pen thahaan dai maidii
	โดยให้เหตุผลว่าชายที่ แต่งงานแล้วเป็นทหารได้ไม่ดี	(He) argued that married men didn’t make good soldiers.
Ms Kim:	tae nakbun Waalenthaai henjai khon thii rakkan jueng thamphithii taeng-ngaan hai yaang lap lap
	แต่นักบุญวาเลนไทม์เห็นใจ คนที่รักกัน จึงทำพิธีแต่งงาน ให้อย่างลับๆ	But St. Valentine sympathised with lovers, and (went on) marrying them in secrecy.
Malee:	ui… thaan klaahaan maak nakha
	อุ๋ย… ท่านกล้าหาญมากนะคะ	Wow! He was courageous.
Ms Kim:	chai thaan doanjap dai lae thuukprahaanchiiwit
	ใช่ ท่านโดนจับได้และถูก ประหารชีวิต	Yes, he was. He was arrested and sentenced to death.
Mr Jim:	tawnthii thaan raw prahaan yuu nai khuk
	ตอนที่ท่านรอประหารอยู่ในคุก	While he was in jail waiting for execution,
Mr Jim:	phuukhum khawrawng hai thaan chuay raksaa taabawt khawng luuksao
	ผู้คุมขอร้องให้ท่านช่วยรักษา ตาบอดของลูกสาว	the jailer asked him to cure his daughter’s blindness.
Ms Kim:	waa kan waa taa thoe haai duay khwaamsatthaa lae patihaan
	ว่ากันว่า ตาเธอหายด้วย ความศรัทธาและปาฏิหารย์	It was said she gained her sight because of faith and miracles.
	kawn thuuk prahaan thaan dai thing noat laa thoe waa “From Your Valentine”
	ก่อนถูกประหารท่านได้ทิ้งโน้ต ลาเธอว่า “From Your Valentine”	Before the execution, St. Valentine left her a farewell message that read "From Your Valentine”
Malee:	kaw loey klaaipen prapheynii song khawkhwaam nii haikan chaimai kha
	ก็เลยกลายเป็นประเพณีส่ง ข้อความนี้ให้กัน ใช่ไหมคะ	(This) became the tradition of sending that message to each other, didn’t it?
Ms Kim:	thuuktawng
	ถูกต้อง	Right!
Malee:	aw laew thammai tawng song kan nai wanthii sipsii kumphaaphan la kha
	อ้อ แล้วทำไมต้องส่งกันใน วันที่ 14 กุมภาพันธ์ ละคะ	One more thing, why do (we) send them on February 14?
Mr Jim:	lawng thaai duu si
	ลองทายดูซิ	Can you guess?
Malee:	ey… naa ja pen wannthii thaan thuuk prahaan chai mai kha
	เอ… น่าจะเป็นวันที่ท่านถูกประหาร ใช่ไหมคะ	Eh… Perhaps it was the day he was executed, was it?
Ms Kim:	thuuktawng keng
	ถูกต้อง เก่ง	Right, good!
Malee:	naasao nakha tae thaan khong diijai thaa thaan saapwaa rao chalawng wan khawng thaan thukpii
	น่าเศร้านะคะ แต่ท่านคงดีใจ ถ้าท่านทราบว่าเราฉลองวัน ของท่านทุกปี	It’s sad, but he must be happy if he knows that we celebrate his day every year.

There are three words in today's conversation that might confuse you.
The first one is the word thaan. In Thai language, we sometimes use different personal pronouns depending on the levels of social status and relationship. The word thaan in the conversation is used as a third person pronoun meaning 'he, him' because we're talking about a saint — a revered figure. However, thaan means exactly as 'you' in English when speaking to a person of higher rank or in a respectful manner, whereas khun is used in a more general conversation.

The second thing to note is the expression of passive voice in Thai. The particles doan (more coloquial) and thuuk are attached in front of a verb, like doanjap, thuukprahaanchiiwit , for example.

The last point is also the colloquial term, thing (rising tone), which is used in the same way as 'to leave' a message or a note, for example, in English.
