You may have probably heard your Thai friends use the phrase of apology, khaw-thoot-thii, quite often. Sometimes its cut down to thoot thii . Its used in the same way as khaw thoot , but khaw-thoot-thii is casual and appropriate among friends. Another expression that may confuse you with its meaning is khon-hai-thua as in khon-hai-thua laew tang fai klaang klaang. I think this is confusing because of the word hai which functions as a helping verb showing the sense of the imperative. The expression pattern would be verb + hai + adjective. Within the context of this weeks conversation, some possible phrases with this pattern are: laang hai sa-aat (wash it clean), lot fai hai awn (turn the heat down to low), thingwai hai ra-u (leave it till its fluffy and dry), duu hai dii na (watch it closely). waa duay kaan hung khaao
Rice is the main staple of Thailand and many Asian countries. In Thailand in general, we have rice for every meal. We start off our days with khaaotom, a small and light meal of soft-boiled rice or rice soup. At lunch, we quickly fill our stomachs with a single rice dish. For dinner, when we are more relaxed at home, we sit down for a full dinner enjoying a plate of piping hot boiled rice together with a few other dishes. Khaaoniew (glutinous rice) and khaaojao (nonglutinous rice) are two main varieties of rice in Thailand. Khaaoniew , sometime is referred as khaaonueng , is preferred in the Northeast and the North. A third well-known variety is khaaoniewdam or black glutinous rice. Lets look this week at how to prepare rice.
