| Do you notice this?
There are a few expressions in the conversation worth noting: The particle hae as in oe tawp yakk hae! is added at the end of a sentence in order to emphasise or strengthen the sense of the sentence in a casual way. Another expression, indigenous among Thai friends, when praising someone yaa chom yaa chom diew Nita loy. The literal meaning is Please dont admire me. Im nearly floating. The last expression is thaothii as in thaothii Taen jam dai mii arai baang la means the same as what (one has done) so far, as much as (one can do). |

Phuut Phaasaa Thai gives you useful topical and seasonal Thai words and phrases used in daily-life conversations. The column will give you some instant Thai language to help you out in common situations.

thambun kan noy

You might have noticed that many Thai Buddhists gratefully observed the most important Buddhist holiday, Visakha Puja Day. Its the day we remember Buddhas birth, achieving enlightenment and death. Many activities are organised to promote the significance of this sacred day when we commemorate and honour Buddha and his teachings. It also opens a wide opportunity for merit-making thambun.
Thambun ? What does this mean? Do Thais thambun on Buddhist holidays and festivals? What do they do when they thambun ? You might wonder why we Thais talk about this so often like thambun mai kha/khrap; pai thambum maa; khaowat thambun sie noy. You might also have seen many activities related to merit-making throughout the year..
This weeks conversation features explanations of those questions.
