pai thambun maa wan pharuehat thii laew pen wan Wisaakhabuuchaa ja

ไปทำบุญมา
พฤหัสที่แล้วเป็นวันวิสาขบูชาจ้ะ

I went merit making. Last Thursday was Visakha Puja Day.

Anita:

Nitaa daiyin kham thambun boy maak  maaikhwaam waa yaangrai kha

นิต้าได้ยินคำทำบุญบ่อยมาก
หมายความว่าอย่างไรคะ

I’ve heard the word thambun so often. What does it mean?

Taen:

oe… tawp yaak hae!  Taen tham pai taam thii tham tham kan maa............

เอ่อ…. ตอบยากแฮะ!
แตนทำไปตามที่ทำๆ กันมา

Err… Tough to say, eh! I just do it mechanically (without thinking much).

Taen tham arai baang la thii riekwaa pen kaanthambun

แตนทำอะไรบ้างล่ะ
ที่เรียกว่าเป็นการทำบุญ

What are some of the things you do that are called thambun?

Taen:

kaw… takbaat  waiphra  fangtham  thuesiin  haithaan

ก็… ตักบาตร ไหว้พระ
ฟังธรรม ถือศีล ให้ทาน

Something like… offering food to monks, paying respect to the Three Gems (Buddha, Dhamma and Sangha), listening to dhamma, following the five precepts and being willing to share.

Anita:

tawng thambun kap phra thii wat thaonan  chaimai

ต้องทำบุญกับพระเท่านั้น ใช่ไหม

Merit has to be made only to the monks, doesn’t it?

Taen:

ey… mai naa ja chai phroh kaanchuayluea khon uen  kaanchuayluea sangkhom   kaw pen kaanthambun mueankan

เอ… ไม่น่าจะใช่ เพราะการช่วยเหลือ
คนอื่น การช่วยเหลือสังคม ก็เป็น
การทำบุญเหมือนกัน

Eh… I don’t think so because helping other people (and) helping out in society are also considered to be merit making.

kaanthamthaan kaw pen kaanthambun yaang nueng

การทำทานก็เป็นการทำบุญอย่างหนึ่ง

Sharing is also a form of merit making.

การทำทานคืออะไร นิต้าไม่เข้าใจ

What does kaanthamthaan mean? I don’t understand.

Kaanthamthaan khue kaanhai  kaansala  kaanbaengpan hai kap khon thuapai

การทำทานคือการให้ การสละ
การแบ่งปันของให้กับคนทั่วไป

Anita:

ngan maaikhwaam waa thambun chai kap phrasong

งั้นหมายความว่า
ทำบุญใช้กับพระสงฆ์

So that means thambun is used with monks.

thamthaan chai kap khon thuapai

ทำทานใช้กับคนทั่วไป

And thamthaan is used with ordinary people.

Taen:

thuuktawng  tae thambun mii khwaammaai kwaang kwaa kaanhai

ถูกต้อง แต่ทำบุญมีความหมาย
กว้างกว่าทำทาน

But thambun  has a much wider meaning than thamthaan.

Anita:

sadaengwaa nawkjaak thamthaan laew  mii withii kaanthambun baep uen uen iik

แสดงว่า นอกจากทำทานแล้ว
มีวิธีการทำบุญแบบอื่นๆ อีก

This means there are other ways of making merit besides thamthaan (giving).

Taen:

chailaew  mae!  Nita nii keng jang loey

ใช้แล้ว แหม! นิต้านี่เก่งจังเลย

Right! Wow! You are so smart.

Anita:

yaa chom   yaa chom   diew Nita loy
arai iik thii thue pen kaanthanbun

อย่าชมๆ เดี๋ยวนิต้าลอย
อะไรอีกที่ถือเป็นการทำบุญ

No, no, no, no, no. That's too much. What are some other things that can be referred to as thambun ?

Taen:

thangmot mii sip withii duaykan  tae Taen jam dai mai mot…

ทั้งหมดมี 10 วิธีด้วยกัน แต่แตนจำได้ไม่หมด…

Altogether there are ten ways, but I can’t recall all of them.

mii  thuesiin  fangtham  chuayluea sangkhom…  laew kaw thamsmaathi

มี ถือศีล ฟังธรรม ช่วยเหลือสังคม…
แล้วก็ทำสมาธิ

There’s following the five precepts, listening to dhamma, helping out in society…, and meditating.

Anita:

uemm!   khon dai arai jaak kaanthanbun

อือม์! คนได้อะไรจากการทำบุญ

Um! What do people get from making merit?

Taen:

kaw…   daibun   khue im-oep jai   dai chue waa khon jaibun

ก็… ได้บุญ คือใจอิ่มเอิบ
ได้ชื่อว่า คนใจบุญ

Urr… we get bun in return — a feeling of contentment, and to be thought of as a kindhearted person.
