Translating newspaper English to Thai

Eddie:	soy khao baan phom namthuam iiklaew khrap
	ซอยเข้าบ้านผม น้ำท่วมอีกแล้วครับ	The soi to my place is flooded again.
Archan:	baan thoe yuu klai khlawng rue plao
	บ้านเธออยู่ใกล้คลองหรือเปล่า	Is your place close to a klong?
Eddie:	yuu tit khlawng loey khrap
	อยู่ติดคลองเลยครับ	It’s next to one.
Acharn:	thuam yoe rue plao la
	ท่วมเยอะหรือเปล่าล่ะ	Does it flood deeply?
Eddie:	phaw thuam langthao khrap
	พอท่วมหลังเท้าครับ	A little over my ankles.
Acharn:	ja thuam maakkwaa nii iik na
	จะท่วมมากกว่านี้อีกนะ	It’ll get deeper.
Eddie:	thammai roe khrap
	ทำไมเหรอครับ	Why is that so?
Acharn:	Duean nii pen duean sipsawng
	เดือนนี้เป็นเดือนสิบสอง	This is the twelfth month.
	duean haeng kaan laoy khrathong ngai
	เดือนแห่งการลอยกระทงไง	It’s Loy Krathong month.
Eddie:	chai jing si na
	ใช่ จริงสินะ	Yeah, that’s right.
Acharn:	wannii pen wan khoen sip-et kham duean sipsawng
	วันนี้เป็นวันขึ้น 11 ค่ำ เดือนสิบสอง	Today is the eleventh night of the waxing moon of the twelfth month,
	iik sii wan kaw pen wan loykrathong laew
	อีกสี่วันก็เป็นวันลอยกระทงแล้ว	only four more days to Loy Krathong day.
Eddie:	Chai chai phreyng rawng waa “wanphen duean sipsawng
	ใช่ๆ เพลงร้องว่า “วันเพ็ญเดือนสิบสอง	Yeah, and the song goes — "On the full moon of the twelfth month,
	nam kaw nawng tem taling rao thanglaai
	น้ำก็นองเต็มตลิ่ง เราทั้งหลาย	water overflows the banks, we all,
	chaai ying sanuk kan jing wan loykrathong
	ชายหญิง สนุกกันจริง วันลอยกระทง”	men and women enjoy ourselves very much on Loy Krathong Day."
Acharn:	keng nii Etdii rawng dai phroh kwaa khonthai iik
	เก่งนี่ เอ็ดดี้ ร้องได้เพราะกว่าคนไทยอีก	Very good, Eddie. You can sing better than (some) Thais.
Eddie:	khawpkhun khrap Aajaan
	ขอบคุณครับ อาจารย์	Thanks so much.
Acharn:	ngan khruu khaw thaam thoe noy na
	งั้น ครูขอถามเธอหน่อยนะ	So, let me ask you something.
	phreyng loykhrathong bawk arai thoe baang
	เพลงลอยกระทงบอกอะไร เธอบ้าง	What does Loy Krathong song tell you?
Eddie:	umm bawkwaa… nam nawng taling nai duean sipsawng
	อือ บอกว่า… น้ำนองตลิ่งในเดือนสิบสอง	Um, it says… the water overflows riverbanks in the twelfth month.
Acharn:	thoe dai khamtawp rueang namthuam soy laew yang la
	เธอได้คำตอบเรื่อง น้ำท่วมซอยแล้วยังล่ะ	Did you get the answer to the flood in your soi?
Eddie:	sadeang waa duean nii mii nam maak pen prajam
	แสดงว่าเดือนนี้มีน้ำมาก เป็นประจำ	That means the water is normally very high is this month.
Acharn:	chai lae pen khaangkhoen duay nam jueng maak pit pakati
	ใช่ และเป็นข้างขึ้นด้วย น้ำจึงมากผิดปกติ	Yes, and (now) the moon is waxing, so the water is higher than usual.
Eddie:	umm jueng moh kae kaanloy krathong maak
	อือม์ จึงเหมาะ แก่การลอยกระทงมาก	Umm, so it’s a good time for floating krathong.

Language watch:

When talking about a lunar calendar, many people find Thai terms for moon phases a bit difficult, even some Thais. This may be because we name days as nights and label them according to the phases of the moon.

For example, the first day of the waxing moon of any month is wan khoen nueng kham which can be directly translated as ‘the day of the waxing moon night one’.

Let’s look at other useful Thai moon terms:

the moon
= duangjan, phrajan

waxing moon
= khoen or khaangkhoen

waning moon
= raem or khaangraem

the first (second, third, fourth,…) waxing moon day
= khoen nueng (sawng, saam, sii, …) kham

the first (second, third, fourth,…) waning moon day
= raem nueng (sawng, saam, sii, …) kham

full moon = wanphen, phrajan tem duang

moonlit night
= duean-ngaai

moonless night
= dueanmuet

Now, to add a little more ‘moon’ information — we name the lunar months by numbers; duean sipsawng, duean paet and so on. But for the first and second months, we use the ancient Thai terms for numbers. They aren’t duean nueng or duean sawng, but they are duean aai and duean yii.
