Translating newspaper English to Thai

Thong :	Etdii painai maa na
	เอ็ดดี้ ไปไหนมาน่ะ	Hi, Eddie. Where have you been?
Eddie:	pai wing awk kamlangkaai maa
	ไปวิ่งออกกำลังกายมา	I’ve just been jogging.
Thong:	wae khaao maa kin kaafae kan kawn si
	แวะเข้ามากินกาแฟกันก่อนสิ	Come on in and have a cup of coffee!
Eddie:	khawpkhun khun la tham arai yuu aw! aan nangsuephim
	ขอบคุณ คุณล่ะ ทำอะไรอยู่ อ๋อ! อ่านหนังสือพิมพ์	Thanks! What are you doing? Ah, reading the paper.
	khun rap nangsuephim chabap nii roe
	คุณรับหนังสือพิมพ์ฉบับนี้เหรอ	Do you subscribe to this paper?
Thong:	plaao phom rap iik chabap nueng
	เปล่า ผมรับอีกฉบับหนึ่ง	No, I get another one.
	tae wannii lawng sue chabap nii maa aan duu
	แต่วันนี้ลองซื้อฉบับนี้มาอ่านดู	But today I just bought this one to try it.
Eddie:	oe nangsuephim Thai mii kii prapheyt
	เอ้อ หนังสือพิมพ์ไทยมีกี่ประเภท	Eh! How many types of Thai newspapers are there?
Thong:	eh… phom mai naejai na tae thii rao phuut phuut kan kaw mii
	เอ… ผมไม่แน่ใจนะ แต่ที่เราพูดๆ กันก็มี	Eh.. I’m not quite sure, but we normally refer to them as
	nangsuephim prapheyt huakiew huadaeng
	หนังสือพิมพ์ประเภทหัวเขียวหัวแดง	huakiew huadaeng newspapers (red-and-green bannered newspapers).
	prapheyt nii ja nak pai thaang khaao chaaobaan
	ประเภทนี้จะหนักไปทางข่าวชาวบ้าน	This type focuses on khaao chaaobaan (human interest) news.
Eddie:	thammai jueng riekwaa huakiew huadaeng la
	ทำไมจึงเรียกว่าหัวเขียวหัวแดงล่ะ	How come you refer to them as huakiew huadaeng ?
Thong:	riek taam sii khawng phaathua
	เรียกตามสีของพาดหัว	That’s the colour of their banners.
Eddie:	aw! laew mii prapeyt nai iik
	อ้อ! แล้วมีประเภทไหนอีก	I see! Is there any other type?
Thong:	kaw mii huadam sueng sanoe khaao nak nak kwaa
	ก็มีหัวดำ ซึ่งเสนอข่าวหนักๆ กว่า	Yeah, there’s huadam which reports on heavier stuff.
Eddie:	khaao chaaobaan maaithueng khaao baep nai
	ข่าวชาวบ้านหมายถึงข่าวแบบไหน	What does khaao chaaobaan mean?
Thong:	kaw ja pen khaao prapheyt phuamie tiikan
	ก็จะเป็นข่าวประเภทผัวเมียตีกัน	News about quarrels among married couples,
	khaao thii kiewkhawng kap chiiwit prajamwan
	ข่าวที่เกี่ยวข้องกับชีวิตประจำวัน	issues about daily life,
	khaao thaloh wiwaat khaao plaek plaek
	ข่าวทะเลาะวิวาท ข่าวแปลกๆ	rows, brawls and oddities.
	phuut ngaai ngaai kaw khue sanoe khaao thii chaaobaan sonjai
	พูดง่ายๆ ก็คือ เสนอข่าวที่ชาวบ้านสนใจ	In other words, they publish human interest kinds of stories.
Eddie:	iik prapheyt nueng la
	อีกประเภทหนึ่งล่ะ	What about the other type?
Thong:	prapheyt nii mak ja sanoe khaao thii kwaang khoen
	ประเภทนี้มักจะเสนอข่าว ที่กว้างขึ้น	This type covers a broader range of news.
	chen khwaam khlueanwai thaang kaanmueang
	เช่น ความเคลื่อนไหวทางการเมือง	Like political movements,
	thaang kaanthahaan seytthakit khaao thualook
	ทางการทหาร เศรษฐกิจ ข่าวทั่วโลก	military, economics and world news.
Eddie:	khun pen faen prajam prapheyt nai la
	คุณเป็นแฟนประจำ ประเภทไหนล่ะ	Which kind are you a fan of?
Thong:	phom roe phom rap nangsuephim thurakit chabap nueng
	ผมเหรอ ผมรับ หนังสือพิมพ์ธุรกิจฉบับหนึ่ง	Me? I subscribe to a business daily.
	laew kaw sue thang huasii lae huadam thaa mii khaao thii naasonjai
	แล้วก็ซื้อทั้งหัวสีและหัวดำ ถ้ามีข่าวที่น่าสนใจ	I also buy both huakiew huadaeng and huadam if they happen to run interesting news.
Eddie:	phom kaw aan laai chabap muean kan
	ผมก็อ่านหลายฉบับเหมือนกัน	Yeah, I read many, too.

In previous lessons, we looked at the way to show grammatical points by adding affixes to content words. This rule is applied to forming parts of speech as well.

One way to form a noun is to attach khwaam in front of a verb with an abstract meaning.

For example, the noun of the verb khlueanwai (to move) is khwaam khlueanwai (movement).

For action verbs like sanoe (to publish), kaan is used instead. So the noun form is kaan sanoe. Here’s a little practice for you — what are the noun forms of the following verbs in Thai?

To hate = ___________

To love = ___________

To quarrel = ___________

To work = ___________

To speak = ___________

To read = ___________

To understand = ___________

To know = ___________

One natural expression to note is the repetition of a verb, as in — thii rao phuut phuut kan kaw mii…(according to what people say…). Some other phrases are:
thao thii fang fang kan maa (according to what we’ve heard…)

duu duu kan pai kawn yaa phoeng tatsin (Let’s wait and see. Don’t decide now.)
