Sap Jaak Khao looks at a selection of vocabulary from a timely news story in both Thai and English. It is helpful for learners of both languages

One effective way to learn new words is by following a particular news story for a period of time. At the moment, unfortunately and sadly, the most dramatic news story is about war on Iraq, which will continue for many days to come. This is a good opportunity, however, to try out the technique with war words. Let's begin with this Matichon 's story reporting on the sixth day of the war.

เข้าสู่กรุงแบกแดด การถูกอิรักต่อสู้อย่างเหนียวแน่น จากเดิมที่คาดหมายว่าการต่อต้านจะมีน้อย
ทำให้เป้าหมายการเข้าถึงกรุงแบกแดดล่าช้ากว่ากำหนด จากเดิมได้กำหนดว่าจะเข้าถึงแบกแดด
ในวันที่ 25 มีนาคม ขณะเดียวกันต้องปรับกลยุทธ์ในการสู้รบ หลังจากในช่วง 2 วันที่ผ่านมา สหรัฐ
และฝ่ายพันธมิตรเป็นฝ่ายเพลี่ยงพล้ำหลงเข้ากับดักของอิรักที่ใช้ยุทธวิธีกองโจรซุ่มโจมตี จนฝ่าย
พันธมิตรเสียชีวิตไปหลายนายและจำนวนหนึ่งถูกอิรักจับเป็นเชลย อย่างไรก็ตาม ยังสามารถรุกคืบ
ไปข้างหน้าได้ โดยอยู่ห่างจากแบกแดดเพียง 80 กิโลเมตรเท่านั้น
