Thai-English vocabulary from the Thai dailies

Sap Jaak Khao looks at a selection of vocabulary from a timely news story in both Thai and English. It is helpful for learners of both languages

The news report from Post Today shows another Thai-language newspaper writing style — the use of abbreviations. Knowing some common shortened names will help you register them more quickly and enhance your reading speed. Abbreviations appears in the headline and throughout the story.

ก๊าซหุงต้ม อีกทั้งวางท่อตามแนวสายส่งไฟฟ้าแรงสูงของการไฟฟ้าฝ่ายผลิตแห่งประเทศไทย
(กฟผ.) ซึ่งอยู่ห่างจากบ้านเรือนประชาชน
