Translating newspaper English to Thai

Daniel:	khun mii ngaan adireyk mai khun Sawai
	คุณมีงานอดิเรกไหม คุณไสว	Have you got a hobby, Khun Sawai?
Sawai:	phom kaw pluuk tonmai nit nit noy noy pai yaangnan lae
	ผมก็ปลูกต้นไม้นิดๆ หน่อยๆ ไปอย่างนั้นแหละ	I just grow a few plants.
	ja riekwaa ngaan adireyk dai rue plao kaw mai ruu
	จะเรียกว่างานอดิเรก ได้หรือเปล่าก็ไม่รู้	I don’t know if that’s called a hobby.
	sabaaijai dii muea hen tonmai hai phon
	สบายใจดี เมื่อเห็นต้นไม้ให้ผล	(I) just feel delighted when I see my plants bear fruit.
Daniel	khun pluuk arai baang la
	คุณปลูกอะไรบ้างล่ะ	What do you grow?
Sawai:	kaw mii phaksuankhrua baan mai krathaang baang
	ก็มีผักสวนครัวบ้าง ไม้กระถางบ้าง	Some kitchen garden plants and some potted plants.
Daniel:	phaksuankhrua Thai dai kae arai baang
	ผักสวนครัวไทย ได้แก่อะไรบ้าง	What are some of your Thai kitchen garden plants?
Sawai:	suanmaak ja pen samunphrai thii jampen samrap khurathai
	ส่วนมากจะเป็นสมุนไพร ที่จำเป็นสำหรับครัวไทย	Most of them are herbal plants for Thai cuisine.
	mii takhrai phrik khamin makruut kaphrao hooraphaa
	มีตะไคร้ พริก ขมิ้น มะกรูด กะเพรา โหระพา	There’s lemon glass, turmeric, kaffir lime, holy basil, and sweet basil.
	suan phak kaw mii tamlueng phakwaan thuaphuu makhuea
	ส่วนผักก็มี ตำลึง ผักหวาน ถั่วพู มะเขือ	And for veggies I have ivy gourd, phakwaanbaan, wings beans and eggplant.
Daniel:	sadaengwaa khun mii thii yoe si na jueng pluuk dai laai yaang
	แสดงว่าคุณมีที่เยอะสินะ จึงปลูกได้หลายอย่าง	You must have quite a lot of space so you can grow that many plants.
Sawai:	mairawk phom pluuk yaang la ton sawng ton thaonan
	ไม่หรอก ผมปลูกอย่างละ ต้นสองต้นเท่านั้น	No, I just grow one or two of each kinds.
	tamlueng kap thuaphuu… phom kaw hai lueay pai taam rua
	ตำลึงกับถั่วพู ... ผมก็ให้เลื้อยไปตามรั้ว	Ivy gourd and wings bean… I just let them climb on the fence.
	nawknan kaw pluuk wai bon thiiwaang khaangrua
	นอกนั้นก็ปลูกไว้ บนที่ว่างข้างรั้ว	The rest are planted in the space next to the fence.
Daniel:	khun tawng chai welaa duulae yoe rue plao
	คุณต้องใช้เวลาดูแล เยอะหรือเปล่า	Do you have to spend much time looking after (your garden)?
Sawai:	mailoey klapjaak tham-ngaan tawnyen kaw rotnam
	ไม่เลย กลับจากทำงาน ตอนเย็น ก็รดน้ำ	Not at all. When I get home from work in the afternoon, I water them.
	wansao aathit kaw saipui phruandin
	วันเสาร์อาทิตย์ ก็ใส่ปุ๋ย พรวนดิน	On weekends, I give them some compost and fork up the soil.
Daniel:	thiibaan khun kaw dai thaan phak sot thukwan si na
	ที่บ้านคุณก็ได้ทาน ผักสดทุกวันสินะ	You must have fresh veggies every day, I reckon.
Sawai:	phak baang yaang kaw tawng sue mueankan phroh pluuk eyng maidai
	ผักบางอย่างก็ต้องซื้อ เหมือนกันเพราะปลูกเอง ไม่ได้	We have to buy some — the kinds we can’t grow.
Daniel:	khun chawp thamkapkhaao rue jueng chawp tham suankhrua
	คุณชอบทำกับข้าวหรือ จึงชอบทำสวนครัว	You like cooking, that’s why you like gardening, right?
Sawai:	phom tham maipen loey tae phom chawp kin phak sot
	ผมทำไม่เป็นเลย แต่ผมชอบกินผักสด	I can’t cook at all, but I love to eat fresh veggies.
	phak pluuk eyng plawtphai dii maitawng klua saanphit
	ผักปลูกเองปลอดภัยดี ไม่ต้องกลัวสารพิษ	Homegrown veggies are safe — don’t have to worry about pesticides.
Daniel:	chai chai jing khawng khun
	ใช่ๆ จริงของคุณ	Yeah, you’re absolutely right.
Sawai:	wanlang khun tawng maa kinkhaao baanphom na
	วันหลังคุณต้องมา กินข้าวบ้านผมนะ	You must have a meal at my home one day, okay?

Vocabulary check:

Today’s conversation has many Thai common expressions you may hear quite often and a few of them have no English equivalents. However, with some explanation, I think, you may want to use them yourself making your Thai sound more natural.

First is nit nit noy noy — “just a little; just a few, quite a little, not seriously”. Sometimes this suggests the sense of being humble.

The next one is pai yaang nan lae — which has nothing to do with “go” at all, but suggests “doing something without any particular intention”. This expression also suggests the sense of being humble.

The third expression is jing khawng khun — which actually means ‘(What) you (said) is true.’ As a matter of fact khawng doesn’t have to be there at all, but I don’t know why we put it in.

The “No” response in Thai is another expression worth noting. You saw mairawk and mailoey above. Another common one is maila. All three are softened by the -rawk , -loey and -la endings.
