Translating newspaper English to Thai

Kate:	“khiikeng triem uak loy namman saw khaw nii”
	“ขี่เก๋งเตรียมอ้วก ลอย น้ำมันส.ค.นี้”	“khiikeng triem uak loy namman saw khaw nii”
Koy:	keng nii Keyt aan khaao phaasaa thai khlawng loey
	เก่งนี่ เคท อ่านข่าว ภาษาไทยคล่องเลย	Very good, Kate! (You can) read a Thai news story very fluently.
Kate:	yang mai keng aan dai tai mai khaojai loey
	ยังไม่เก่ง อ่านได้ แต่ไม่เข้าใจเลย	No, I’m not that good yet. (I can) read but I don’t understand at all.
	Koy chuay athibaai noy si
	ก้อย ช่วยอธิบายหน่อยสิ	Can you help explain that, Koy?
Koy:	dai loey Keyt mai khaojai trong nai
	ได้เลย เคท ไม่เข้าใจตรงไหน	Sure! What is it that you don’t understand?
Kate:	kham raek loey “khiikeng” maaikhwaam waa arai
	คำแรกเลย “ขี่เก๋ง” หมายความว่าอะไร	The first word — “khiikeng”. What does it mean?
Koy:	“khiikeng” maaithueng khon thii khap rotkeng
	“ขี่เก๋ง” หมายถึง คนที่ขับรถเก๋ง	“khiikeng” means people who drive “rotkeng”..
	“rotkeng” khuue ‘car’ nan-eng Keyt
	รถเก๋ง คือ คาร์ นั่นเอง เคท	“rotkeng” are cars.
Kate:	aw! laew “uak” la
	อ้อ! แล้ว อ้วก ล่ะ	Ah, I see. What about “uak”?
Koy:	kham nii tawng athibaai yaao noy
	คำนี้ต้องอธิบายยาวหน่อย	This word needs longer explanation.
	thiijing “uak” maaithueng aajien
	ที่จริง อ้วก หมายถึงอาเจียร	Actually, “uak” means to vomit.
	tae ao maa chai nai iik khwaammaai nueng
	แต่เอามาใช้ใน อีกความหมายหนึ่ง	But it’s used in another meaning.
	rao ja “uak” muea ruusuek waa rao “ja thon arai maidai laew”
	เราจะ "อ้วก"เมื่อรู้สึกว่าเรา "จะทนอะไรไม่ได้แล้ว"	We’ll “uak” when we feel that we “are not able to bear something any longer.”
	taam khaao nii daw maaithueng namman ja “phaeng sut khiit”
	ตามข่าวนี้ก็หมายถึง น้ำมันจะ "แพงสุดขีด"	According to this news story, the gasoline is going to be exceedingly expensive.
Kate:	phroh arai
	เพราะอะไร	Why is that so?
Koy:	phroh rathabaan ja “loy raakhaa namman”
	เพราะรัฐบาลจะ "ลอยราคาน้ำมัน"	Because the government is going to “loy raakhaa namman” (float the oil prices).
Kate:	aw “loy namman” nai khaao kaw khue “loy raakhaa namman” chaimai
	อ๋อ “ลอยน้ำมัน” ในข่าว ก็คือ”ลอยราคาน้ำมัน” ใช่ไหม	Ah, (so) “loy namman” in the story is the same as “loy raakhaa namman”, right?
Koy:	chai laew keng thiinii khaojai laew yang la
	ใช่แล้ว เก่ง ทีนี้เข้าใจแล้วยังล่ะ	Right! Good! Do you understand (it) now?
Kate:	uem khaaojai laew la ja phaeng khoen iik kii baht
	อือม์ เข้าใจแล้วล่ะ จะแพงขึ้นอีกกี่บาท	Um! I see! (And) how much is it going to go up.
Koy:	iik tang saam bath nae pen lit la yiisip kwaa baht
	อีกตั้ง 3 บาทแน่ะ เป็นลิตรล่ะยี่สิบกว่าบาท	Another three bath, making it’s more than twenty baht a litre.
	phaeng pen prawatkaan loey na Keyt
	แพงเป็น ประวัติการณ์เลยนะ เคท	This is a record price, Kate.
Kate:	yaangnii jueng tawng phuut waa “khon khii keng triem uak dai laew”
	อย่างนี้จึงต้องพูดว่า “คนขี่เก๋ง เตรียมตัว อ้วกได้แล้ว”	Then we have to say, “khon khii keng triem uak dai laew”
Koy:	Keyt yuu nii yiem jing jing
	เคท ยูนี่เยี่ยมจริงๆ	Kate, you’re really brilliant!

In today’s conversation, there are a few expressions of clarification worth noting:

If you’d like someone to explain something you don’t understand, you’d say — chauy athibaai noy.

If you want to be more polite, you’d say, chauy athibaai annii noy daimai kha/khrap.

And if you’re talking to a close friend, chauy athibaai noy si would be good enough.

Or, you can just say, phom/chan mai khaojai (loey).

To be more explicit, you can ask, kham nii /trong nii maaikhwaam waa arai.

The person you talk to may ask you to clarify what it is that you don’t understand with —mai khaojai trong nai (la). Sh

e or he may go on with kham nii /trong nii maaithueng…; or k
ham nii /trong nii maaikhwaam waa…. And he or she may ask you with khaojai laew yang after some explanation. Of course, you’d say, khaojai laew.
