Translating newspaper English to Thai

Mary:	chuangnii sabaai noy ngaan maikhoy yung thaorai
	ช่วงนี้สบายหน่อย งานไม่ค่อยยุ่งเท่าไร	(I’m) a bit happier these days. My work’s less hectic.
Mali:	dii si ngan rao paithiew kanmai sao-aathit nii
	ดีซิ งั้นเราไปเที่ยวกันไหม เสาร์อาทิตย์นี้	Good! Shall we go somewhere for fun this weekend?
Mary:	ja painai kandii
	จะไปไหนกันดี	Where shall we go?
Mali:	pai nangruuea thiew maenam kanmai aakaat roem sabaai khuen
	ไปนั่งเรือเที่ยวแม่น้ำกันไหม อากาศเริ่มสบายขึ้น	How about a boat trip? The weather is getting a bit pleasant.
Mary:	naasonjai rao ja pai trong nai kan
	น่าสนใจ เราจะไปตรงไหนกัน	That sounds interesting! Where is it we’re going?
Mali:	klai klai thaewnii eng wat dawnwaai
	ใกล้ๆ แถวนี้เอง วัดดอนหวาย	(It’s a place) close by — Wat Don Wai.
Mary:	Mali khoey pai laew yang
	มะลิเคยไปแล้วยัง	Have you been there?
Mali:	yang loey tae muuea sao thiilaew phuuean khao paimaa
	ยังเลย แต่เมื่อเสาร์ที่แล้ว เพื่อนเขาไปมา	Not yet, but some friends went there last Saturday.
	khao bawkwaa prathapjai maak thang kaannangruuea lae talaat
	เขาบอกว่าประทับใจมาก ทั้งการนั่งเรือ และตลาด	They said they were impressed with both the boat trip and the market.
Mary:	mii talaat duay roe
	มีตลาดด้วยเหรอ	Is there a market too?
Mali:	mii chuue talaat dawnwaai naasonjai maak
	มี ชื่อตลาดดอนหวาย น่าสนใจมาก	Yes, it’s the Don Wai Market. Very interesting!
	Maerii ja daihen chiiwit baep thai thai na
	แมรี่จะได้เห็นชีวิต แบบไทยๆ นะ	You’ll see Thai ways of life there, Mary.
	mii phak phonlamai sot sot jaak suan maa khaai
	มีผักผลไม้สดๆ จากสวนมาขาย	There are vegetables and fruits fresh from orchards for sale.
	mii khanom thai thai laai chanit tham khaai trongnan loey
	มีขนมไทยๆ หลายชนิด ทำขายตรงนั้นเลย	There are various kinds of typical Thai desserts sold fresh from the stoves.
Mary:	ngan wansao nii rao paikan loey diimai
	งั้นวันเสาร์นี้เราไปกันเลย ดีไหม	Then let’s go there this Saturday, shall we?
Mali:	dii rao awk doenthaang sak jetmoong chao
	ดี เราออกเดินทางสัก เจ็ดโมงเช้า	Let’s do that. We’ll leave around seven in the morning.
	laew rao paihaa aahaanchao kin kan thiinoon
	แล้วเราไปหาอาหารเช้า กินกันที่โน่น	And we’ll have something there for breakfast.
Mary:	toklong
	ตกลง	Good idea!

Let’s look at other uses of sabaai this week. I think you all know its greeting function — sabaai dii mai / rue khrap / kha, right? This word can refer to health like chuangnii phom maikhoy sabaai loey (I’m not quite well these days.); khun sabaai khoen baang rueplao (Are you feeling better?)

Together with jai, sabaai can describe our feeling. If we’re happy, we say phom / chan sabbaaijai jang loey (I’m happy.); phom mai sabaaijai loey (I’m unhappy.); phom maikhoy sabaaijai loey (I’m not quite happy.).

Also, we can use sabaai to explain the state of one’s life: chiiwit khonthai sabaai kwaa taekawn yoe (The life of Thai people is much better than in the former time.); mae phom sabaai khoen muuea phom mii ngaan tham (My mother lived a better life when I got a job.).

We can describe ‘nice weather or climate, buildings, places’ as aakaat [kamlang] sabaai (The weather’s nice.), baan khun sabaai jang (Your house is very nice.), muueang chaaithaley sabaai (A seaside town is nice. / It’s nice at a seaside town.).
