Translating newspaper English to Thai

Chai:	khun khoey paiduu bangfai phayaanaak mai
	คุณเคยไปดู บั้งไฟพญานาคไหม	Have you ever gone to see bangfai phayaanaak?
Chris:	arai na phom mai khaojai
	อะไรนะ ผมไม่เข้าใจ	What is that? I don’t undersand.
Chai:	khun maikhoey daiyin ruueangnii roe
	คุณไม่เคยได้ยิน เรื่องนี้เหรอ	You’ve never heard of this before?
	thiimii luukfai sii daeng daeng phung khoen jaak Maenamkhoong na
	ที่มีลูกไฟสีแดงๆ พุ่งขึ้นจากแม่น้ำโขงน่ะ	(It’s) about the reddish fireballs shooting up from the Mekhong River.
Chris:	aw naga fireballs khoey daiyin tae mairuujak chuue phaasaaThai
	อ๋อ นากาไฟร์บอลล์ส์ เคยได้ยินแต่ไม่รู้จัก ชื่อภาษาไทย	Ha ah, the naga fireballs! (I’ve) heard about them but I don’t know the expression in Thai.
	phaasaaThai riakwaa arai na
	ภาษาไทยเรียกว่าอะไรนะ	What do you call them in Thai?
Chai:	bang-fai phayaanaak pai duu duaykan mai
	บั้ง-ไฟ-พญานาค ไปดูด้วยกันไหม	bangfai phayaanaak. Do you want to go to watch them together?
Chris:	thiinai
	ที่ไหน	Where?
Chai:	thii Nawngkhaai yennii phom ja khaprot pai
	ที่หนองคาย เย็นนี้ผมจะขับรถไป	In Nong Khai. I’m driving up there later this afternoon.
Chris:	khawpkhun thii chuan tae phom maidai laa-ngaan luangnaa
	ขอบคุณที่ชวน แต่ผมไม่ได้ลางานล่วงหน้า	Thanks for inviting me, but I haven’t asked for a leave.
	thiijing phom yaak paiduu duay taaton-eng na
	ที่จริงผมอยากไปดู ด้วยตาตนเองนะ	Actually I like to see them with my own eyes.
	khun khoey paiduu maalaew roe
	คุณเคยไปดูมาแล้วเหรอ	Have you gone to see them?
Chai:	paimaalaew khrangnueng muuea sawngsaam piikawn
	ไปมาครั้งหนึ่งแล้ว เมื่อสองสามปีก่อน	(Yes,) once. A few years back.
	phuuean phuuean loey hai phom chuay phaa pai khrangnii
	เพื่อนๆ เลย ให้ผมช่วยพาไปครั้งนี้	(So) my friends have asked me to take them there this time.
Chris:	pen-ngai piinan khun hen yoemai
	เป็นไง ปีนั้นคุณเห็นเยอะไหม	How was it that year? Did you see a lot?
Chai:	ooy piinan na yoe maak pen phan luuk
	โอ๊ย ปีนั้นนะ เยอะมาก เป็นพันลูก	Wow, that year — tons of them! More than a thousand!
	phaw thumnueng na kaw roem khoenmaa trongnaa phom loey
	พอทุ่มหนึ่งนะก็เริ่มขึ้นมา ตรงหน้าผมเลย	At around seven in the evening, (they) just began to shoot up right in front of me.
Chris:	sii arai lae too mai
	สีอะไรและโตไหม	What colour were they? Were they big?
Chai:	siidaeng om chomphuu too khanaat luukthennit dai
	สีแดงอมชมพู โตขนาดลูกเทนนิสได้	Pinkish red — about the size of tennis balls.
Chris:	piinaa khun pai iik na phom ja paiduay
	ปีหน้าคุณไปอีกนะ ผมจะไปด้วย	Please go again next year. I’ll go with you.

Language check:

A few more general expressions in everyday Thai this week. There are two ways to ask if someone’s experienced in going somewhere or doing something.

When you ask for the first time, you’d say:

khun khoey + verb + something + mai — which functions in the same way as ‘Have you ever + verb + something?’

And if you want to check if the person has already done it, you’d say:

khun khoey + verb + maalaew roe (Have you gone to watch them?)

The possible responses can be:

maikhoey or khoey and / or a phrase detailing how many times you’ve done something and when.

Let’s look at the examples from today’s conversation:

Chai: — khun khoey paiduu bangfai phayaanaak mai
Martin: — khun khoey paiduu maalaew roe

What would you say the following to your Thai friends?

Have you ever been to Nong Khai?

Have you been there?
= ………………
Have you ever tried Isan food?
