Mike:

ได้ คนอื่นๆ ไปไหนกัน

Sure. Where are others?

Montri:

khao riip awk pai tham thura kan mot
 

เขารีบออกไปทำธุระกันหมด

They’ve all hurried out pai tham thura.

Mike:

pai tham thura  maaikhwaam waa yaangrai
 

ไปทำธุระ หมายความว่ายังไง

What does pai tham thura mean?

Montri:

pai tham ruueang jampen suantua  chen pai praisanii  pai suue khawng  pai haa maw  pai roongphayaabaan

 

ไปทำเรื่องจำเป็นส่วนตัว
เช่น ไปไปรษณีย์ ไปซื้อของ
ไปหาหมอ ไปโรงพยาบาล

To run errands like going to the post office, doing some shopping, seeing the doctor, or going to the hospital.

Mike:

ngan phom kaw tawng pai tham thura muueankan tawnbaai nii
 

งั้นผมก็ต้องไปทำธุระ
เหมือนกันตอนบ่ายนี้

So, I have to pai tham thura, too, this afternoon.

Montri:

khun mii thura arai ruue
 

คุณมีธุระอะไรหรือ

What thura do you have?

Mike:

phom tawng pai taw maw  pai taw bai anuyaat tham-ngaan
 

ผมต้องไปต.ม.

I’ve to go to immigration to renew my work permit.

Montri:

ngan rao riip pai kinkhaao kan kawn  khun mii tura
 

งั้นเรารีบไปกินข้าวกันก่อน

Then let’s hurry down to have lunch. You’ve got a thura.

Mike:

mai tawng riip kaw dai  phom nat wai tawn baai sawng …  yen nii rao pai duuem bia kan mai
 

ไม่ต้องรีบก็ได้ ผมนัดไว้
ตอนบ่ายสอง
เย็นนี้เราไปดื่มเบียร์กันไหม

We don’t have to rush. My appointment is at 2. How about some beer this evening?

Montri:

waa ...  yennii phom mii thura  wai phruengnii daimai
 

ว้า ... เย็นมีผมมีธุระ
ไว้พรุ่งนี้ได้ไหม

Bah, I have a thura. Let’s make it tomorrow, okay?

Mike:

    • Language check:

    Another phrase relating to pai tham thura  is pai tham thura hai  "somebody".

    For example, if you’ve sent Ton, your son, to do something at the bank for you, and his friend comes over looking for him, you’d say, "Ton pai tham thura hai phom thii thanaakhaan".

    One more expression with thura worth noting, but to use sparingly is maichai thura arai khawng. Use it sparingly because it functions in the same way as “It’s none of your business”.

    Previously, this column has dealt with a few practical expressions beginning with pai, like pai kin khaoo and pai thiew. There’s another more advanced and versatile phrase worth mentioning — pai tham thura. It is also very useful to know and to use. We Thais always use the expression as an explanation or excuse, either true or invented, when we disappear from work or home. Montri explains to Mike what pai tham thura means in this week’s conversation. In addition, you’ll see other handy phrases with pai and thura.
