Translating newspaper English to Thai

Montri:	aao Mai maa naan laew yang
	อ้าว ไมค์ มานานแล้วยัง	Ah, Mike. Have you been here long?
Mike:	sak khrueng chuamoong dai
	สักครึ่งชั่วโมงได้	About half an hour.
Montri:	khawthoot thii ploy hai khun khoy naan phom pai tham thura thii roongphayaabaan maa khiw yaao luueakoen
	ขอโทษที ปล่อยให้คุณ คอยนาน ผมไปทำธุระ ที่โรงพยาบาลมา คิวยาวเหลือเกิน	Sorry to keep you waiting for a long time. I’ve just run an errand at the hospital. The queue was so long.
Mike:	mai pen rai rawk tae khun pen arai pai jueng tawng pai haa maw
	ไม่เป็นไรหรอก แต่คุณเป็นอะไรไป จึงต้องไปหาหมอ	Don’t worry, but what’s wrong with you that made you see the doctor?
Montri:	mai dai pen arai rawk phom pai ao bairaprawngphaet pai samakngaan mai
	ไม่ได้เป็นอะไรหรอก ผมไปเอาใบรับรองแพทย์ ไปสมัครงานใหม่	I’m fine. I went to get a doctor’s certificate. I’m applying for a new job.
Mike:	laew pai nuek waa khun mai sabaai sia-iik phom yaak pai len songkraan phruengnii
	แล้วไป นึกว่า คุณไม่สบายเสียอีก ผมอยากไป เล่นสงกรานต์พรุ่งนี้	Ah, it’s that. I thought you were unwell. I want to join in the Songkran festivities tomorrow.
Montri:	dai phom ja pai pen phuuean
	ได้ ผมจะไปเป็นเพื่อน	Okay, I’ll pai pen phuuean.
Mike:	pai pen phuuean ... maaikhwaam waa arai
	ไปเป็นเพื่อน ... หมายความว่าอะไร	Pai pen phuuean … what does that mean?
Montri:	maaikhwaam waa phom ja pai kap khun duay
	หมายความว่า ผมจะไปกับคุณด้วย	That means I’ll go along with you.
Mike:	khawpkhun maak rao ja pai kan kiimoong
	ขอบคุณมาก เราจะไปกันกี่โมง	Thanks. What time should we go?
Montri:	sak baaimoong rao thoo chuan Etdii kap Ook pai duay diimai pai laai khon sanuk dii
	สักบ่ายโมง เราโทรชวน เอ็ดดี้กับโอ๊คไปด้วยดีไหม ไปหลายคนสนุกดี	About one in the afternoon. Shall we phone Eddie and Oak and ask them to join us? It’s good fun with many people.
Mike:	dii dii phom thoo eng … ey mairapsaai diew ja thoo iik thii
	ดีๆ ผมโทรเอง ... เอ ไม่รับสาย เดี๋ยวจะโทรอีกที	Good idea! Let me phone them. … No answer. I’ll phone again soon.
Montri:	phom ja chuay thoo duay mai tawng huang sawng khon nan pai nae
	ผมจะช่วยโทรด้วย ไม่ต้องห่วง สองคนนั้นไปแน่	I’ll help you phone. Don’t worry; those two will go for sure.

Language check:

I’m sure you’ve noticed that Thais always add a small particle like, na, nii and si at the end of a sentence or a question.

Today there is one more — rawk (low tone). This particle is always put at the end of a negative statement to soften a negative response, like:

mai pen rai rawk
(Don’t worry; That’s all right!)

mai dai pen arai rawk
(No, I’m not unwell. I’m just fine.)

mai chai rawk khrap
(No, it isn’t.)

chan mai chuea rawk
(I don’t believe that.)

But if a speaker raises the voice to a high tone with an abrupt end — rock, it becomes a threat. diew kaw doon rock! (Stop/don’t or else!)
