Here’s the answer! Look at my car!

John:

aao…  thammai rot pen yaang nan la …  aw!  paithiew songkraan maa chai mai

 

อ้าว ... ทำไมรถเป็นอย่างนั้นล่ะ
อ๋อ! ไปเที่ยวสงกรานต์มาใช่ไหม

Hey… Why does your car look like that? I guess you must have come back from a Songkran trip, right?

Jop:

khun keng maak!  suay mai  mii jut siikhiew siichomphuu siikhaao tem pai mot

 

คุณเก่งมาก!
เป็นไง รถผมสวยไหม
มีจุดสีชมพู สีขาว
เต็มไปหมด

Uh huh! How do you like it? Does it look nice — full of pink and white dots all over?

John:

eyh…  pii nii khao haam chai paeng  mai chai roe

 

เอ ... ปีนี้เขาห้ามใช้แป้ง
ไม่ใช่เหรอ

Huh… They didn’t allow powder splashing this year, did they?

Jop:

chai  tae phom pai taang jangwat maa  hen saat paeng sai kan talawt

 

ใช่ แต่ผมไปต่างจังหวัดมา
เห็นสาดแป้งสีใส่กันตลอด

Yes, but I went upcountry and saw (people) splashing powdered water all along the way.

John:

khun pai jangwat nai maa la

 

คุณไปไหนมาล่ะ

Which province did you go to?

Jop:

Sukhothai  khun la pai thiew nai maa rue plao

 

สุโขทัย คุณล่ะ
ไปเที่ยวไหนมาหรือเปล่า

Sukhothai. What about you? Did you go anywhere?

John:

aao!  phom kaw pai Sukhoothai muueankan nii

 

อ้าว ... ผมก็ไปสุโขทัย
เหมือนกัน

Hey! I went to Sukhothai, too.

Jop:

roe!  rao pai jangwat diew kan nii  tae mai joe kan  phom pai khon diew

 

เหรอ ... เราไปจังหวัด
เดียวกันนี่ แต่ไม่เจอกัน
ผมไปคนเดียว

Really? We went to the same province, but we didn’t meet.

John:

waa!  phom mai ruu  mai ngan ja dai phak thii diew kan lae dai pai duay kan

 

ว้า! เสียดายจัง
ผมไม่รู้ ไม่งั้น
จะได้ไปพักที่เดียวกัน
และได้เที่ยวด้วยกัน

Ah! That’s a shame. I went alone, otherwise (we) could have stayed at the same place and gone touring together.

Jop:

wai ookaat naa laewkan na

 

ไว้โอกาสหน้าแล้วกันนะ

    • Language check:

    Let’s look at the expressions with diew and variations.

    First, diew kan means “same”, as in — rao pai jangwat diew kan (“we went to the same province”).

    Other common expressions with this meaning are:
    - nai welaa diew kan     (“at the same time”),
    - yaang diew kan     (“the same thing”).

    Secondly, the phrase khon diew means “alone” as in phom pai khon diew (“I went alone”.)

    Sounding similar to diew kan but actually different in use is the expression muuean kan, which means “also, too, in a similar way”.

    Therefore, “I went to Sukhothai too”, or “I also went to Sukhothai.” is phom pai Suthoothai muueankan. A

    nother way to put it is rao pai jangwat diew kan or rao pai thii diew kan.
